Mob Beats Young Couple in Saharanpur Over Love Affair, Victims Plead for Mercy

Saharanpur, Jan 29, 2026: In a disturbing incident in a village in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a young couple was brutally beaten by a mob in front of the village council (panchayat) for engaging in a romantic relationship. The victims reportedly begged for mercy, folding their hands in prayer, but their pleas went unheard. Authorities say no formal complaint has yet been filed with the police.

According to local reports, the incident occurred around ten days ago. A young man had gone to meet his girlfriend when villagers learned of their meeting and apprehended both. Without involving law enforcement, the couple was brought to the house of the village head, where a panchayat session was held. During the session, not only were their personal relations questioned, but the couple was also ordered to be publicly beaten.

Eyewitnesses said that men and women present at the panchayat repeatedly struck the couple with shoes, sticks, and batons. Throughout the ordeal, no one intervened to protect the victims.

Local sources further reported that the couple belongs to different castes. Following the public beating, the panchayat allegedly forced the young man and woman to sign a written pledge promising never to meet again in the future, after which they were released. The village head, Surendra Kumar, described the incident as normal and said that the families had only exchanged a few slaps in anger.

Bargaon police station in-charge Ramesh Kumar confirmed that the matter has come to their attention and that preliminary information has been gathered in the village. He added that no written complaint has yet been submitted and that action would be taken once a formal report is filed.
