Trivandrum, Kerala: Trivandrum may soon see the end of mixed-gender massages if the city’s first BJP mayor, V. V. Rajesh, has his way. On Monday, Mayor Rajesh took a strong stance against “cross-massaging” — massages performed by practitioners of the opposite gender — declaring that such practices go against the country’s culture and will not be allowed in the capital.
The statement comes in the wake of a Trivandrum Municipal Corporation drive targeting spas where alleged improper activities were reported. Several establishments have already faced action from the corporation following complaints and investigations.
Mayor Tightens Rules After Incident in Pathanamthitta
The mayor’s decision follows a disturbing incident in Tiruvalla, Pathanamthitta district, where a gangster allegedly raped a spa employee after an altercation. Speaking to the media, V. V. Rajesh said, “Cross-gender massages, where men and women massage each other, promote a culture that is not in line with our traditions. Therefore, such practices cannot be allowed. If legally permitted, there is no need for municipal intervention. Nevertheless, spas operating within the corporation limits will be monitored.”
Legal Compliance Under Scrutiny
Rajesh emphasized that all spas must comply with legal standards, including having qualified massage therapists. “If a spa employs someone without proper qualifications, it will be considered illegal. During municipal inspections, we will ensure that all spa documents are authentic,” he stated.
While Trivandrum is developing into a modern port city welcoming business and diverse ventures, Rajesh’s strict approach has created a stir among spa operators. Legal experts note that there is currently no law explicitly banning cross-gender massages, which raises questions about the feasibility of enforcing such a ban. The final decision on the issue is awaited.
