Miraculous Recovery: 25-Year-Old Delhi Patient Survives Rare Brain Parasitic Infection

New Delhi, February 3:
In a remarkable medical turnaround, doctors in Delhi successfully treated a 25-year-old man suffering from cerebral amebiasis, a rare and potentially fatal parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. The parasite had spread to his brain, lungs, and heart, leaving the patient in critical condition.

The young man had been admitted to two major hospitals over the past two months, undergoing multiple tests and procedures, including lung biopsies and chest tube insertions, while being treated for suspected tuberculosis. Despite intensive care, his condition continued to deteriorate, with high fever, severe headaches, seizures, and neck stiffness.

When he arrived at PSRI Hospital, a detailed re-evaluation by a team led by senior physician Dr. Manish Mohil revealed a mass in his brain, accumulation in the left lung, and a cardiac lesion. Dr. Amitabh Gupta suspected the rare parasitic infection, which is exceptionally uncommon in the brain; fewer than six such cases have been reported worldwide, most of them fatal.

Treatment with the anti-parasitic drug metronidazole was immediately initiated. Within 48 hours, the patient’s fever subsided, and his condition improved dramatically. Subsequent blood and cerebrospinal fluid tests confirmed the presence of the parasite.

Dr. Gupta emphasized that this case highlights the importance of considering parasitic infections in patients with multi-organ involvement who do not respond to conventional treatments. Timely diagnosis and precise treatment saved the young man’s life, showcasing the critical role of vigilance and medical expertise in rare infections.
