In a horrifying incident highlighting the deadly consequences of illegal kite-flying materials, a milk vendor sustained grievous injuries after his neck was slashed by Chinese manja on an overbridge in Guna on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred on the Bajranggarh (BG) Road overbridge, sending shockwaves across the district.
The victim, identified as Jaima Banjara, a resident of Kunda village under Bajranggarh police station limits, was travelling to Guna with his wife and brother to sell milk when the tragedy struck. As their motorcycle crossed the overbridge, a sharp, nylon-coated Chinese kite string hanging in the air suddenly wrapped around Jaima’s neck, cutting deep before he could react.
The impact was severe, causing Jaima to collapse on the road, bleeding profusely. His brother, who was seated behind him on the bike, also came into contact with the string and suffered injuries, though his condition is reported to be stable.
Panic broke out at the scene as passersby and family members rushed the injured men to the district hospital, where doctors confirmed that the string had penetrated deep into the neck, resulting in a critical wound. The blood-soaked family reportedly brought the lethal string along as evidence.
The incident has once again exposed the failure of enforcement against the sale and use of Chinese manja, which is officially banned due to its razor-sharp texture and high fatality risk. Despite repeated directives from the district administration, the deadly kite string continues to be sold openly in local markets.
Residents expressed outrage, stating that injuries to pedestrians, bikers, and birds have become alarmingly common, especially ahead of Makar Sankranti, when kite flying peaks. Citizens have demanded immediate and strict action against sellers and distributors of banned manja, warning that negligence could lead to loss of life.
The incident has reignited concerns over public safety and prompted calls for intensified police drives to curb the illegal trade of Chinese manja before more innocent lives are put at risk.
