Migrant Worker Attacked with Sharp Weapons by Minors in Tamil Nadu, Assault Video Posted Online

A disturbing incident of violence has come to light in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruttani, where a group of four minors attacked an Odia migrant worker with sharp weapons and later uploaded the video of the assault on social media, police said on Monday.

The attack occurred near abandoned railway quarters in Tiruttani, on the outskirts of Chennai. Police have taken all four accused—17-year-old school dropouts—into custody and initiated legal proceedings under the Juvenile Justice Act.

Attack After Argument on Local Train

According to police, the victim, K. Suraj, a migrant worker from Odisha, was travelling on a Chennai–Tiruttani EMU local train on Saturday evening. The four minors boarded the same coach at Tiruvallangadu station and allegedly picked an argument with him.

When Suraj got down at Tiruttani station, the boys followed him, pushed him towards the nearby railway quarters, and launched a brutal attack. Three of the minors assaulted him with sickles, while the fourth was seen flashing a “victory sign” during the assault, which was recorded on a mobile phone.

The video was later uploaded to Instagram, drawing widespread outrage.

Victim Seriously Injured, Now Stable

After the attack, the injured Suraj staggered onto a nearby road, where passers-by alerted the Railway Police. He was rushed to Tiruttani Government Hospital and later referred to Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

Doctors have confirmed that Suraj’s condition is now stable.

Police said Suraj had recently arrived in Chennai following a family dispute and was surviving by doing odd jobs.

Accused Traced Through Social Media

Using the viral video as evidence, police swiftly identified the accused. Later the same night, all four minors were detained from the Tiruttani–Arakkonam bypass road, where they were allegedly consuming alcohol.

After being produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, three minors were sent to a government observation home. The fourth accused, who is physically disabled, was released after counseling and handed over to his parents with a warning.

Serious Concerns Over Juvenile Violence

The incident has raised serious concerns about juvenile crime, misuse of social media, and violence against migrant workers. Police officials said further investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and whether additional charges will be invoked.

Authorities have also warned that posting violent content online is a punishable offence, regardless of the age of the accused.
