A major disturbance erupted late Monday night on the campus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where a confrontation between students and security personnel escalated into heavy stone-pelting and vandalism. The clash, which lasted for nearly two hours, left more than 100 individuals injured, including both students and security staff. Police teams from multiple stations were deployed to control the situation and finally managed to push students back to their hostels.
According to initial reports, the incident began near Rajaram Hostel after a vehicle allegedly hit a student. Angered by the incident, several students marched to the Proctor’s Office to lodge their protest. There, a heated argument broke out between the students and staff, which soon turned into a physical confrontation.
Following this, the situation spiraled out of control. Enraged students began vandalising property and pelting stones. Some students alleged that a lathi-charge by security personnel resulted in injuries, prompting a larger group of hostel students to join the protest and retaliate fiercely.
The unrest led to the destruction of campus property, including a two-wheeler, torn flex boards, and damaged structures. A large group of students later assembled outside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence, staging a sit-in protest and demanding immediate action.
On the other hand, security personnel claimed that before the major clash, a few students with covered faces were seen assaulting another student, hinting that tensions had been brewing.
ACP Bhelupur Gaurav Kumar, who reached the spot with police forces, confirmed that the situation is now under control. Additional police deployment has been made across the campus to prevent further unrest.
The university administration is expected to release an official statement soon, while investigations into the cause and escalation of the incident are underway.
