The longstanding property dispute within the erstwhile Mewar royal family has once again captured public attention. What initially began among Bhagwat Singh Mewar’s three children has now reached the next generation, involving the descendants of Arvind Singh Mewar. Following Arvind Singh’s demise, his daughter Padmaja has filed a legal challenge claiming her share of the family property.
The Supreme Court has recently ordered the transfer of ongoing property disputes from the Jodhpur High Court and Bombay High Court to the Delhi High Court. The hearing in this matter is now scheduled for January 2026. The dispute, revolving around the vast family assets, has become a major topic of discussion in Udaipur and beyond.
Details of the Property Dispute
Padmaja, sister of Maharaja Laxyaraj Singh, has approached the court seeking her rightful share. Estimates of Laxyaraj Singh’s total wealth vary widely. Some sources claim it to be around ₹10,000 crore, while others suggest it could be as high as ₹50,000 crore. The contested properties include the iconic Udaipur City Palace, the NRH Hotels Group, and several other assets across the region.
A Glimpse into the Mewar Dynasty
The Mewar royal lineage is one of India’s most respected dynasties. It traces back to Maharana Kumbha, followed by Maharana Sangram Singh (Sanga) and the legendary Maharana Pratap. Subsequently, the lineage continued with Bhopal Singh and Bhagwat Singh. Arvind Singh Mewar, son of Bhopal Singh, was married to Vijaya, and they had three children: Laxyaraj Singh, Padmaja, and Bhargavi. Bhagwat Singh’s son, Mahendra Singh, married Nirupama Kumari and had a son, Vishwraj Singh.
Current Generation of Laxyaraj Singh
Maharaja Laxyaraj Singh of Udaipur currently heads the family, which comprises five members. His wife, Nivrutti Kumari Singh, originally a princess from Odisha, has two daughters and one son. Known for maintaining traditional attire and royal customs, Nivrutti Kumari ensures her daughters follow the family’s heritage in dress and decorum.
About Vishwraj Singh’s Family
Vishwraj Singh, grandson of Bhagwat Singh and son of Mahendra Singh, is married to Mahima Kumari. Mahima recently won the legislative assembly elections from Nathdwara, marking the family’s continued influence in both social and political spheres.
The property dispute within the Mewar royal family underscores the complex inheritance issues that continue to challenge even India’s most illustrious royal households. With the Delhi High Court set to hear the case in January 2026, the nation watches closely how the legacy and wealth of one of India’s oldest dynasties are shared among its heirs.
