Mewar Royal Family Property Dispute Deepens: Udaipur Royals at Legal Crossroads

Udaipur: The longstanding property dispute within the former Mewar royal family has resurfaced, intensifying tensions among the descendants of Maharana Pratap. The latest conflict arises over the will of Arvind Singh Mewar, bringing renewed legal battles between his children, Laxyaraj Singh Mewar and Padmaja Kumari Parmar.

Historical Context of the Dispute

The property disputes in the Mewar family date back decades. Initially, conflicts arose among the three children of Bhagwat Singh Mewar over inheritance and wills. After his death in 1984, disagreements escalated, culminating in a 37-year legal battle. In 2020, the Udaipur District Court ordered the division of the contested properties into four shares. Until the verdict, most assets remained under Arvind Singh Mewar, while the other heirs received limited portions.

Current Legal Battle

Following the recent death of Arvind Singh Mewar on 16 March 2025, disputes over inheritance and the validity of his will have intensified. Laxyaraj Singh Mewar, currently recognized as the family’s heir and operator of the HRH Hotels Group, and his sister Padmaja Kumari Parmar are now engaged in a legal confrontation over rights to the City Palace, HRH Hotels, and other properties. Initially, cases were pending in different courts, complicating the legal process.

Supreme Court Intervention

The matter has now reached the Supreme Court, which directed that all related cases be transferred to the Delhi High Court for unified adjudication. This move aims to streamline proceedings and ensure consistent rulings on interconnected issues.

Legacy and Inheritance Disputes

The dispute’s roots trace back to 1983 when Bhagwat Singh Mewar decided to sell and lease certain family properties, a decision opposed by his elder son, Mahendra Singh. Following this, the elder son gradually lost control over the family trust and assets, with Arvind Singh taking over management responsibilities. After Bhagwat Singh’s demise in 1984, inheritance battles intensified, lasting across multiple courtrooms for decades.

2020 Court Verdict

The Udaipur District Court divided the properties into four shares, allotting one to Bhagwat Singh Mewar’s estate and the remaining three to his children. Major assets, including Shambhu Niwas Palace, Badi Pal, and Ghashghar, were under Arvind Singh’s control, while Mahendra Singh and Yogeshwari Kumari received limited portions.

The ongoing dispute between Laxyaraj Singh and Padmaja Kumari signals that the Mewar royal family’s inheritance saga is far from over, with legal and familial tensions poised to continue.
