Mathura: Panic has gripped the Sarafa market in Mathura after a trader allegedly absconded with silver worth several crores. The trader, identified as Dinesh Agrawal, reportedly borrowed large quantities of silver from multiple businessmen and also cheated ordinary citizens by collecting lakhs of rupees under the pretext of selling plots.
Jyoti Sharma reports: The incident has left both prominent silver traders and local residents shaken. Dinesh Agrawal is accused of taking silver from various traders without making any payments before fleeing the city. Pradeep Khandelwal, a resident of Bairagpura, filed a police complaint stating that Agrawal took 14 kg of silver from him, valued at approximately ₹14.79 lakh. Similarly, Mahesh Garg of Saraswati Kund was allegedly cheated of ₹10 lakh under the promise of a plot in Vrindavan Bangar.
According to market sources, Dinesh Agrawal is not the only one involved. Reports suggest that two other prominent traders have also gone missing, allegedly absconding with nearly 1,500 kg of silver from around two dozen traders. Dinesh alone is accused of taking approximately 700 kg of silver. Based on current market rates, the total fraud is estimated to be worth several crores of rupees. Many victims are hesitant to come forward due to concerns over social reputation.
A delegation of affected traders met with Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar, appealing for justice. The traders also expressed concerns about the rising criminal activities in the region. The SSP assured strict action and has deployed police teams to track down Agrawal and investigate his network and possible hideouts.
This incident has raised serious questions about trust and credibility in Mathura’s business community. Authorities have warned citizens to thoroughly verify all documents before engaging in property deals or major commercial transactions.
