Meerut: Smart Meter Installation Sparks Clash, Electricity Department Team Driven Out by Locals

Meerut, UP: A team from the electricity department faced fierce opposition while attempting to install smart meters in the Moripara area under Kotwali police jurisdiction in Meerut. Locals reportedly verbally abused the team, threatened them with sticks, and physically pushed them out of the neighborhood. The incident has been captured on video and is rapidly circulating on social media.

Allegations of Bias and Role of Line-Man
The installation team claimed that the area’s line-man, Harish, played a key role in instigating the residents against them. According to the team, Harish not only encouraged locals to confront the officials but also actively pushed the team out of the area. Harish, however, stated that he only helped ensure the team’s safety as the situation escalated.

SDO Responds
When contacted, the area SDO avoided giving a direct response, stating that the meter installation is being carried out by a private company, and any grievances should be addressed to them. The SDO added that the line-man does not fall under their jurisdiction but is supervised by the 11 KV TL division. The SDO confirmed that the final official response will come from the Managing Director of Power.

Opposition More Pronounced in Hindu-Majority Areas
The electricity team revealed that they encountered the greatest resistance in Hindu-majority areas, while residents in Muslim-majority neighborhoods cooperated without conflict. The team also found that several pre-installed meters had broken seals, raising suspicions of electricity theft.

Department Promises Action
Electricity department officials stated that they were unaware of the incident but assured that strict action would be taken. “Any misconduct against government staff will not be tolerated,” said a department spokesperson, confirming that a probe into the harassment of the team is underway.
