Mathura: The historic Shahji Temple in Mathura is abuzz with festive preparations as Vasant Panchami approaches. On 23 January, the temple’s legendary and mysterious ‘Vasanti Room’ will be opened for devotees—a rare event that occurs only twice a year, attracting visitors from across India and abroad.
A Unique Experience
Famed for its intricate architecture and twisted columns, Shahji Temple offers a visual and spiritual treat. The Vasanti Room, currently undergoing special cleaning and decoration for the past week, features ancient glass chandeliers that are the highlight of this sacred chamber. On Vasant Panchami, the deity Thakurji will be adorned in a yellow (Vasanti) robe, with elaborate floral and festive decorations.
Darshan Timings
Temple administrator Prashant Shah has arranged viewing schedules to ensure devotees’ convenience:
- 23 January (Vasant Panchami): 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM & 5:00 PM – late evening (evening session includes a Bhajan Sandhya, with the chandeliers lit in colorful lights).
- 24 January: Evening darshan from 5:00 PM, after which the Vasanti Room will be closed until the next opening during Sawan.
Architectural Significance
Constructed by the wealthy jeweler brothers Shah Kundan Lal and Shah Fundan Lal, the temple showcases Nawabi and foreign influences. Its main hall features 15-foot twisted columns, an engineering marvel, while the exterior and plinth draw inspiration from Roman architecture.
The temple also reflects the devotion of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. A statue of his consort, in a posture touching the floor, stands in the temple courtyard, symbolizing his wish that devotees’ footsteps themselves bring blessings.
The opening of the Vasanti Room is a rare spiritual event that allows devotees to witness the unique combination of architecture, art, and devotion, making it a must-visit for pilgrims during the festive season.
