Mathura: Who Was Vrindavan’s Sadhvi Chandramukhi? Murdered, Body Burnt, House Sold — Police Crack Case After 11 Months

Mathura: Nearly 11 months after the brutal murder of 70-year-old Sadhvi Chandramukhi Devi, also known as Chitra Dasi, the Mathura Police have finally solved the mystery behind her disappearance. The saint, who had been living alone in Vrindavan’s Goshala Nagar, was killed over a dispute involving just 50 square yards of land. After murdering her, the accused secretly burnt her body and later sold her house using forged documents. Six people, including the main accused Abhishek Sharma, have been arrested.

Lived in Vrindavan for 35 Years
Originally from Bihar, the Sadhvi had been living in Vrindavan for over three decades, performing bhajan and parikrama alone. She suddenly went missing on 21 December 2024. Her spiritual brother, Sant Ladli Das, filed a missing-person complaint after she failed to return. Initial police efforts yielded no leads, but after pressure from saints, the investigation was handed over to City CO Aashna Chaudhary, who cracked the case in just 20 days.

Greed and Debt Behind the Murder Plot
According to the police, the main accused Abhishek Sharma had accumulated debt while purchasing gym equipment. To repay the loan, he allegedly conspired with his associate Vikas Mishra to kill the Sadhvi and sell her property. In December 2024, they strangled the Sadhvi to death and burnt her body at KC Ghat to destroy all evidence. They also stole her property documents, Aadhaar card, and PAN card.

Forged Death Certificate Used to Sell the House
In a calculated fraud, the accused got a fake death certificate issued from Shahjahanpur, falsely declaring the Sadhvi as a resident of that district. Using this forged certificate, they sold her house on 2 May 2025.

Mathura Police have arrested the six accused — Abhishek Sharma, Vijay Singh, Advocate Mohammed, Mohammed Arif, Omkar Singh, and Vikas Mishra. The case has shocked Vrindavan’s saint community, highlighting once again how vulnerable elderly ascetics living alone can be.
