Mathura: Death Toll in Yamuna Expressway Horror Crash Rises to 19; DNA Tests Ordered for Identification

Mathura, Uttar Pradesh: The death toll in the devastating multi-vehicle accident on the Yamuna Expressway has risen to 19, sending shockwaves across the country. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday near milestone 127 under the Baldev police station limits, where dense fog severely reduced visibility, triggering a massive pile-up followed by a raging fire.

According to officials, at least seven private buses, one Uttar Pradesh Roadways bus, and three cars collided in quick succession due to poor visibility. The impact was so intense that several vehicles caught fire instantly, turning the expressway into an inferno.

Passengers Burnt Alive, Over 100 Injured

Officials confirmed that 12 passengers were burnt alive as flames engulfed the vehicles, while others succumbed to severe injuries and impact trauma. More than 100 people were injured in the accident, many of them critically.

Emergency services rushed to the spot, and rescue operations continued for several hours amid wreckage and smouldering vehicles.

Identification a Major Challenge

Due to the extreme fire damage, most bodies were charred beyond recognition, posing a serious challenge for authorities. So far, only four victims have been identified:

  • Sultan Ahmed (64) – Resident of Gonda
  • Akhilendra Pratap Yadav (44) – BJP leader from Prayagraj
  • Rampal (75) – Resident of Azamgarh
  • Usman – Resident of Hamirpur (died during treatment at SN Medical College, Agra)

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Radhaballabh stated that three identified bodies were handed over to families by Wednesday. For the remaining 15 unidentified bodies, relatives of missing passengers are being contacted, and DNA testing will be conducted wherever necessary to establish identity.

Condition of the Injured

Out of the injured, 30 patients admitted to Mathura District Hospital have been discharged after improvement. Three critically injured patients have been referred to Agra for advanced treatment. Most victims admitted to Vrindavan’s 100-bed hospital were released after first aid, while those still hospitalized are reported to be in stable condition.

A Grim Reminder

This tragic accident once again highlights the deadly risks of driving in dense fog and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures on high-speed expressways, especially during winter months.
