Mathura: A joyous purchase turned into a nightmare for Amit Singh of Mathura when the Innova car he bought for ₹29 lakh turned out to be stolen. The scam, orchestrated by a cunning fraudster, almost landed Amit in legal trouble before the Delhi Police uncovered the truth.
The Scam Unfolds
In October 2024, Amit Singh from Jamunadham Colony, Govardhan Chauraha, Mathura, booked a brand-new Innova. Due to long waiting lists at the showroom, he did not receive the car immediately. A fraudster exploited this delay. Kanika Swami, a resident of Kirti Palace, Meerut, posed as a reputed car dealer and contacted Amit.
To gain Amit’s trust, Swami manipulated the showroom into refunding ₹7.5 lakh from Amit’s initial booking. Once Amit received the refund, he believed Swami was a genuine dealer. Swami then promised to deliver a high-quality Innova within 45 days.
The Purchase
In April 2025, Swami presented Amit with a supposedly pristine Innova. Believing the deal was legitimate, Amit paid ₹29 lakh in installments and received the car documents, taking possession of the vehicle. For the next eight months, Amit drove the car without issue.
The Shocking Discovery
Trouble arose when officers from Delhi Model Town Police visited Amit’s home for routine verification and inquired about the Innova. Amit was stunned to learn that the car he was driving was stolen from Delhi. Further investigation revealed that Swami had a criminal record for fraud. Amit promptly lodged a complaint against the cunning dealer.
Police Action
According to CO Anil Kaparwan, a report has been filed against the accused in Meerut, and police are tracing other members of the gang to prevent further scams. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution and verify car dealers before making large payments.
