Gaya, Bihar: In a shocking turn of events, the high-profile gold robbery on the Howrah-Jodhpur Express, which occurred on 21 November, has sent ripples through the Bihar Police department. The heist, involving gold worth ₹1.44 crore, has led to the arrest of Gaya GRP station head (SHO) Rajesh Kumar Singh and the suspension of four policemen implicated in the case.
The Heist Under the Guise of Investigation
According to police sources, the incident involved the ambushing of courier worker Dhananjay Shashwat, who was transporting approximately one kilogram of gold from Kolkata to Kanpur. The accused, including four GRP personnel and two civilians, allegedly snatched three gold biscuits from him while the train was in motion. The victim was beaten and forced off the train, after which the culprits fled with the loot.
SHO’s Role Exposed Through Technical Evidence
Following instructions from the Rail SP, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the robbery. Through meticulous examination of call detail records (CDR), tower locations, and other technical evidence, the involvement of Rajesh Kumar Singh came to light. He was summoned to Patna, interrogated for approximately eight hours, and subsequently arrested. He has now been placed in judicial custody.
Suspension of Officers and Hunt for Civilians
Four GRP personnel—Constables Karan Kumar, Abhishek Chaturvedi, Ranjay Kumar, and Anand Mohan—have been suspended with immediate effect. Meanwhile, two civilian suspects, Parvez Alam and former railway driver Sitaram, are still at large, with police conducting ongoing raids for their capture.
SIT Operates Under DGP Supervision
The case has been registered at Gaya Railway Police Station under FIR No. 334/25. In addition to serious criminal charges under the Indian Penal Code, provisions of the Anti-Corruption Act have also been applied. Sources confirm that the DGP himself is closely monitoring the investigation, with the Rail SP of Gaya leading the SIT to ensure a fair and thorough probe.
This incident has raised serious concerns over internal collusion within law enforcement and the need for stricter safeguards in the transport of high-value consignments.
