Mandsaur (Madhya Pradesh): In a shocking case of cyber harassment, a man in Daloda, Mandsaur, allegedly ruined a young woman’s reputation by creating a fake Instagram account in her name. Using this account, the accused spread objectionable messages to her prospective in-laws, resulting in the cancellation of four marriage proposals.
According to police, the victim (identified as Pinky) and her family had been arranging marriage proposals over the past few months. Each time a proposal progressed, the fake Instagram account became active. The accused, Sandeep Patidar, used the account to communicate with the families and acquaintances of the prospective grooms, spreading false and damaging information that led to the breakdown of the relationships. The repeated incidents caused the victim severe mental distress and depression.
Cyber Investigation Leads to Arrest
After the victim filed a complaint at the Daloda police station, authorities faced the challenge of identifying the anonymous offender. The cybercrime team conducted a technical investigation, which eventually traced the fake account to Sandeep Patidar, a resident of Daloda Rail. Patidar was arrested, and police seized the mobile device he allegedly used to operate the fake Instagram account.
Legal Action
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (Sections 352 and 396[B]) and the IT Act (Section 66[D]) for harassment and defamation. Investigations revealed that the primary motive was to harass the victim and damage her social reputation.
Precautionary Advice
Cyber experts advise that such harassment cases are increasingly common and warn social media users to remain vigilant. Victims are encouraged to take screenshots of abusive content and report it to the police immediately. Privacy settings on social media accounts should also be carefully managed to prevent misuse by unknown individuals.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of SP Vinod Kumar Meena by Daloda police station in-charge Shubham Vyas and his team. Police are continuing the investigation to determine if the accused targeted any other individuals in a similar manner.
