A shocking incident has come to light from the Pachpedi area of Bilaspur district, where a 45-year-old man died due to electrocution while fishing, and his friends allegedly disposed of his body to hide the incident. The case dates back to July 2025, but was revealed only four months later after the accused themselves confessed.
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Puniram Kanwar, had gone fishing with his friends—Tukchand, Sarju, Firanta Kanwar and Gopi Dhruv—near a stream close to Kukukardi Hardi village. The group reportedly used an illegal electric connection drawn from a nearby electric pole to catch fish. During the act, Puniram accidentally came in contact with the live wire and died on the spot.
Panicked by the sudden death, the accused immediately removed the electric wire and hid Puniram’s body in the stream. Later that night, taking advantage of heavy rainfall and strong water flow, they dumped the body into the Shivnath River to destroy evidence. The incident remained undisclosed for nearly four months.
The matter surfaced when police began reviewing old missing person cases after a new station in-charge took charge at the Pachpedi police station. Puniram had been reported missing on July 23, 2025. As police intensified inquiries in the village, the accused grew nervous and eventually disclosed the truth to villagers and the victim’s family.
It was also revealed that a ₹4 lakh out-of-court settlement was reached between the accused and the victim’s family in the presence of village elders. However, upon receiving official information, the police initiated a detailed investigation into the case.
Police officials stated that the matter is being thoroughly probed, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings. The case has raised serious concerns about illegal fishing practices using electricity and attempts to suppress grave crimes through informal settlements.
