Rewa/Mauganj: Police in Mauganj have arrested a man accused of harassing a young woman who allegedly died by suicide earlier this month, an incident that shocked the local community. The accused, identified as Javed Ansari, had been absconding since the woman’s death and was taken into custody after a series of raids.
According to police, the woman, a resident of Ward No. 13, had been under mental distress due to alleged harassment. Her family accused Ansari and another local youth of repeatedly troubling her over several months. They claimed sustained intimidation and threats pushed her into extreme distress.
Allegations of stalking and threats
Family members alleged that Ansari used his acquaintance with the woman to stalk and pressure her. He was accused of following her and allegedly threatening to defame her by circulating videos. Friends of the deceased told investigators she had been living in fear and humiliation for weeks.
The suicide occurred on the morning of January 10, at a time when her family was preparing for her marriage. She was rushed to a community health centre after the incident, where doctors declared her dead. Police were informed immediately and began an investigation.
Arrest after search operation
Following the incident, Ansari went into hiding. Police teams conducted multiple search operations before locating and arresting him. He was produced in court and remanded to jail custody.
Superintendent of Police Dilip Soni said a case has been registered under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for abetment related to the incident. He added that the investigation is ongoing and, at present, police have found no evidence supporting any other angle beyond the harassment allegations.
The case had triggered strong reactions locally, with residents demanding strict action. Authorities have appealed for calm and said further steps will be taken based on evidence gathered during the investigation.
