Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: Construction is progressing rapidly on the Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Salawa village, Meerut. Once completed, it will rank among India’s largest and most modern sports universities, spreading over approximately 700 acres. The ambitious project, backed by the Uttar Pradesh government, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 and aims to become a premier destination for sports education, training, and research.
Strategic Location and Connectivity
The university is being developed across Salawa and Kaily villages along Sardhana Road in Meerut. Its excellent connectivity to Delhi-NCR, along with proximity to national highways, railway networks, and a proposed expressway, will make it easily accessible for athletes, coaches, and students nationwide.
Honoring a Hockey Legend
Named after Major Dhyan Chand, India’s legendary hockey player known as the “Wizard of Hockey,” the university will serve as a comprehensive hub for sports training, sports science, coaching, management, and sports technology. It will have the capacity to train 1,080 athletes annually (540 male and 540 female).
World-Class Facilities for Students and Athletes
Designed to meet international standards, the university will include:
- Synthetic stadiums and grounds for hockey, football, cricket, and athletics.
- Indoor sports complex for badminton, volleyball, basketball, handball, kabaddi, table tennis, gymnastics, squash, and weightlifting.
- Olympic-size swimming pool and water sports training, including canoeing and kayaking.
- Synthetic running tracks, cycling velodrome, and shooting range.
- Sports science center with facilities for physiotherapy, sports medicine, nutrition, performance analysis, and archery.
- Residential hostels for athletes, coaches, and students.
- Academic block offering B.P.Ed, M.P.Ed, sports management, coaching programs, and diploma courses.
- Coach training center to prepare national and international-level coaches.
- Multipurpose halls and gymnasium facilities.
Current Status of Construction
While construction is progressing at a fast pace, minor delays have occurred. Initially slated for completion by March 2026, the project may require a few additional months. Nonetheless, academic sessions have already begun, signaling that the university is steadily moving towards becoming a world-class center for sports education.
Opportunities for Youth in Western Uttar Pradesh
The university offers local athletes and sports enthusiasts a golden opportunity to access world-class training and education without relocating to Delhi, Patiala, or Bengaluru. With state-of-the-art facilities and expert coaching available locally, the university aims to produce players ready for Olympics, Asian Games, and other international competitions.
Boost for Meerut’s Growth
Beyond sports, the university is expected to stimulate economic development in Meerut, creating jobs and infrastructure in sectors such as hospitality, transportation, coaching, healthcare, and the sports industry. This landmark project is set to establish Meerut as a major sports hub in India.
