Major Deeksha C Makes History as First Female Officer to Receive the Sacrifice Badge in Indian Army

In a landmark achievement for women in the Indian Armed Forces, Major Deeksha C. Mudadevanavar has made history by being awarded the prestigious Sacrifice Badge. This marks the first time in the history of the Indian Army that a female officer has received this distinguished honor, which symbolizes unwavering patriotism and selfless dedication.

Serving in India’s Elite Para Special Forces

The Para Special Forces are among the most elite units of the Indian Army, and earning the Sacrifice Badge is considered a dream for every officer. Major Deeksha has now joined this distinguished group, setting a historic precedent for women in the military.

Early Life and Education

Hailing from Davanagere, Karnataka, Major Deeksha’s journey toward the Army began during her school years. She actively participated in the National Cadet Corps (NCC), taking part in drills, camps, and community service activities, which helped her develop teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking skills.

She pursued her MBBS from JJMMC, Davanagere and subsequently joined the Indian Army through the Short Service Commission (SSC), serving as a Medical Officer. Before joining the Army, she worked as a Community Health Officer at Santhebennur Health Centre, providing medical care to rural communities. She was later selected for her MD and served as a Junior Resident in the Department of General Surgery at Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences.

Rigorous Training in Lucknow

Major Deeksha underwent intensive training at the Army Medical Corps in Lucknow, completing the Medical Officers Basic Course (MOBC). Her dedication and determination were recognized with the award of the Sacrifice Badge, reflecting her extraordinary commitment to service.

First Posting in Leh and Overcoming Challenges

Her first posting was at the 303 Field Hospital in Tangtse, Leh. Despite initial setbacks due to physical limitations, which led to her being rejected twice from the Para Special Forces, her perseverance and guidance from commanding officer Colonel Shivesh Singh enabled her to succeed. In December 2022, she officially joined the Special Forces.

Role as a Medical Officer in Special Forces

As a Medical Officer, Major Deeksha provides critical medical support during high-risk operations. Her training allows her to work closely with Special Forces soldiers and manage medical emergencies in challenging environments—a role crucial for the success of operations.

Beyond the Army: Arts, Sports, and Community Service

Major Deeksha also served in Turkey under Operation Dost following a devastating earthquake, providing relief and medical assistance. Besides her military career, she is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, a karate expert, a passionate biker, and volunteers with the NGO Nirbhaya, supporting community initiatives.
