In a significant success ahead of the New Year, the Rajasthan Police have busted a major illegal explosives trafficking racket in Tonk district. The District Special Team (DST) seized 150 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, a highly hazardous explosive material, and arrested two notorious smugglers in the operation. A luxury car used for transporting the explosives has also been confiscated.
Acting on a specific intelligence input, the DST learned that a consignment of illegal explosive material was being transported from Bundi to Tonk in a high-end vehicle. Based on this information, the team set up a blockade in the Baroni police station area and intercepted a suspicious Maruti Ciaz car.
During the search, police recovered a large cache of explosives hidden cleverly inside urea fertilizer sacks to evade detection. Apart from 150 kg of ammonium nitrate, the team also seized dangerous explosive cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire, shocking even the seasoned officers present at the spot.
The arrested accused are residents of Bundi district. Preliminary investigation suggests that the recovered explosive material may have been intended for use in illegal mining activities, as the Tonk region and its surrounding areas have several stone mining sites. However, police have not ruled out other possibilities.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Mrityunjay Mishra stated that investigations are underway to determine whether the ammonium nitrate was meant for carrying out any unlawful blasts or for use in stone quarries. “We are also probing the source of procurement, the supply chain, and whether such material was supplied earlier at other locations,” he said.
Police officials have initiated an in-depth investigation, and further arrests and major revelations are expected in the coming days. The successful operation has been hailed as a major step toward ensuring public safety and curbing illegal explosive trafficking in the region.
