Major Boost to Mumbai’s Lifeline Ahead of BMC Elections: 238 Automatic-Door Local Trains Announced

Mumbai: In a significant pre-BMC election announcement, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday unveiled a major upgrade plan for Mumbai’s suburban railway network, announcing the induction of 238 new local trains equipped with automatic door-closing systems. The move is aimed at enhancing passenger safety, increasing capacity, and modernising the city’s most vital mode of transport.

According to an official statement released late Wednesday night by the Chief Minister’s Office, the new automatic-door trains will be procured as part of a comprehensive infrastructure expansion programme for Mumbai’s rail services. The suburban rail network, often referred to as the city’s lifeline, carries millions of commuters every day.

In addition to the new train procurement, the state government plans to increase the capacity of 120 Mail and Express trains and nearly 3,200 suburban local trains. Infrastructure upgrades will also include the development of three new pit lines at Bandra, expansion of facilities at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and the extension of platforms at Mumbai Central Station to accommodate 24-coach trains.

Further strengthening suburban operations, several major stations will see the construction of additional platforms. These include Jogeshwari (2), Dadar (1), Vasai Road (6), Panvel (5), Kalamboli (5), Kalyan (6), and Parel (6). The projects are expected to significantly ease congestion, reduce overcrowding, and improve overall commuter experience.

Chief Minister Fadnavis expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, stating that passenger safety remains the top priority and that these projects mark a decisive step toward transforming Mumbai’s rail infrastructure.

He also highlighted that Mumbai’s transport ecosystem has witnessed rapid progress in recent years, with major projects such as the expansion of the Metro network, the Coastal Road, and the Atal Setu providing substantial relief from traffic congestion.

With these ambitious railway upgrades, the state government aims to deliver a safer, faster, and more efficient suburban rail system — a move set to bring tangible relief to millions of Mumbai commuters while reinforcing long-term urban mobility goals.
