Darbhanga, Bihar:
In a major and historic development for the youth of Mithilanchal, Maithili language is set to be included in the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET). The announcement was made by BJP Member of Parliament from Darbhanga, Dr. Gopal Jee Thakur, who described the move as a landmark achievement for lakhs of Maithili-speaking students.
Dr. Thakur stated that the long-pending effort to include Maithili in CTET has now reached its decisive stage, with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) approving the proposal in its recent meeting. Once implemented, Maithili-speaking candidates will be able to appear for CTET in their mother tongue, significantly improving access and opportunities.
Proposal Passed in NCTE Meeting
The Darbhanga MP confirmed that the proposal to include Maithili was formally passed during the NCTE meeting. He said the decision would prove transformative for aspirants from Bihar and Mithila region who have been demanding linguistic inclusion for years.
“This is a historic achievement for the future of Mithila and Darbhanga. Lakhs of students will benefit directly from this decision,” Dr. Thakur said.
Gratitude to PM Modi and Education Minister
Sharing the update on social media, Dr. Thakur expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He wrote that since becoming an MP, he has been consistently working toward securing Maithili’s inclusion in CTET, and credited the Prime Minister’s visionary leadership and the Education Minister’s support for taking the process to its final stage.
He also mentioned that Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary has officially communicated that an expert committee has been constituted to facilitate the inclusion of Maithili, and that the process is moving ahead swiftly.
Years of Effort Bearing Fruit
Dr. Thakur noted that he has been pursuing this issue actively since 2024, holding discussions with senior officials and policymakers. He further revealed that during a telephonic conversation, NCTE Chairperson Pankaj Arora personally informed him that the proposal had been approved in the council meeting.
A Milestone for Maithili Language
Calling Maithili the “language of Goddess Sita (Maa Janaki),” the MP said its inclusion in CTET would be a proud moment for Mithila’s cultural and linguistic heritage. He expressed confidence that Maithili would soon formally appear as an option in the CTET examination framework.
The move is being widely welcomed across Bihar, especially in Mithilanchal, where students and educators see it as a long-overdue recognition of one of India’s oldest and richest languages.
