Mumbai: A shocking case of harassment has emerged in Mumbai, where a young government employee became the target of online abuse after a minor dispute with a cab driver. The woman, who had booked a cab from South Mumbai to Dadar, started receiving obscene calls and messages on her phone, leaving her life in turmoil. The Dadar Police have registered a case against the cab driver, Vinay Kumar Yadav, originally from Jharkhand.
How the Harassment Began
The incident traces back to a few months ago when the woman hired a cab driven by Vinay Kumar Yadav. During the ride, a dispute arose over paying a toll charge, which she refused to pay, insisting that the driver should have informed her in advance. After a heated argument, the driver paid the toll and dropped her off at Dadar. The woman assumed the matter was over.
Driver Misuses Personal Details
Unbeknownst to the woman, the driver retained her mobile number, name, photo, and home address from that trip. Driven by revenge, Vinay created a fake Instagram account impersonating her, labeling her as a call girl, and published her phone number for anyone to contact. Soon after, the woman began receiving continuous obscene calls and inappropriate messages.
Impact on the Victim
The harassment escalated to a point where she was receiving calls and messages day and night, including inquiries about “rates” and abusive comments. Despite blocking his number, the online harassment continued through strangers contacting her via the fake account. The victim, deeply distressed, finally approached the Dadar Police for help.
Police Action
Based on her complaint, the police filed a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to defamation, insult to modesty, and obscene acts, as well as relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act. Using the driver’s mobile number, the authorities traced him to his native place in Jharkhand and have issued a notice for his appearance.
This case highlights the dangers of misuse of personal information and the severe consequences of harassment in the digital age, leaving victims traumatized even after minor disputes.
