Maharashtra to Launch Special Campaign to Protect Two-Wheeler Riders and Pedestrians

Mumbai: In a bid to curb the rising number of road accidents, especially those involving two-wheeler riders and pedestrians, the Maharashtra Transport Department has announced a 2026 campaign titled “Save Two-Wheeler Riders and Pedestrians” (‘Dopahiya Swaar–Padchari Bachao’). All Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state have been instructed to implement the initiative.

According to official data, Maharashtra recorded over 36,450 road accidents in 2025, resulting in approximately 15,549 deaths and more than 32,147 injuries. Of those who lost their lives, 57% were two-wheeler riders and 21% were pedestrians. The state aims to reduce road accident fatalities by 50% by 2030, in line with global targets. This campaign was approved after reviewing accident trends during the last week of January. Following WHO guidelines, the program will emphasize road engineering, strict law enforcement, and public awareness.

Highways with Most Accidents to Face Strict Measures
On highways with frequent two-wheeler accidents, three major national or state routes will see strict enforcement of helmet rules. The initiative will gradually expand to other accident-prone roads. Traffic Inspectors will analyze FIR-based accident data through the Road Safety Cell. Accident locations from the past three years will be plotted on Google Maps using a color-coded system: green for 2023, orange for 2024, and red for 2025.

Interceptor Vehicles and Helmet Checks
Maharashtra’s RTOs have been equipped with 69 interceptor vehicles to patrol key highway routes. These radar-equipped vehicles will monitor riders without helmets. Toll plazas will display “No Helmet, No Entry” signs, and violators may face wheel jammers to enforce compliance.

On-Camera Driving Tests Made Mandatory
Before issuing permanent driving licenses, all applicants must now pass an on-camera driving test. RTO officers will review video data for any tests failing to meet standards. The department believes that strict monitoring combined with public awareness can significantly reduce road accidents across the state.
