Maharashtra: BJP Triumphs in Mumbai BMC, Gains Strength Across State’s Municipal Corporations

Maharashtra Election Results 2026: Following a sweeping victory in the state assembly elections, the BJP has consolidated its hold over Maharashtra’s urban landscape. For the first time, the party has secured control of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, while strengthening its presence across other major cities. The opposition, on the other hand, appears fragmented, with Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde) finishing second and Congress slipping to third position.

Municipal Corporation Results 2026:
The election results of 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra were announced on the coronation day of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje. BJP made historic gains by capturing power in Mumbai for the first time, while also retaining dominance in cities like Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis received a warm welcome at party headquarters and later at his residence, reflecting his growing stature in state politics.

Out of a total of 2,869 seats across 893 wards in Maharashtra, the BJP won 1,425 seats, emerging as the clear front-runner. Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) secured 399 seats, Congress managed 324, Sharad Pawar’s party 36, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP 167 seats.

City-wise Distribution of Power:

With 18 municipal corporations under its control, BJP has further strengthened its grip over Maharashtra’s urban centers. The historic win in Mumbai fulfills a long-standing ambition of the party. Analysts note that the path initiated by Pramod Mahajan has now been realized under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis.

BJP’s Growth:
In the 2017 municipal elections, BJP had won 15 out of 27 municipal corporations. This year, the party has increased its tally by securing Mumbai and one more corporation, reflecting a significant urban consolidation.
