Madhya Pradesh is fast becoming a favorite destination for filmmakers, attracting both domestic and South Indian film industries. Over the past three years (2023–2025), more than 200 film projects, ranging from small-scale productions to major films, have been shot across the state, including over 20 big-budget South Indian films such as ‘Akhandha’ and ‘Penniyan Selvan’.
The state’s natural beauty, historical heritage, and film-friendly policies have drawn directors to diverse locations beyond major cities. Iconic towns like Orchha, Chanderi, Maheshwar, as well as smaller districts such as Sehore and Chhindwara, are now popular filming sites.
This surge in film activity is attributed to the Madhya Pradesh government’s Film Tourism Policy 2020 and its updated 2025 Incentive Policy, which increased financial incentives for filmmakers up to ₹10 crore. Notably, South Indian productions receive an additional 10% benefit under the scheme.
To facilitate ease of shooting, the government has introduced a single-window clearance system under the Public Service Guarantee Act, ensuring all permits are issued within 15 days. Moreover, film crews enjoy up to 40% discount on hotel accommodations at state tourism properties.
According to Dr. Abhay Arvind Bedekar, Additional Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, the state’s proactive approach and subsidies have reduced production costs while giving lesser-known locations international visibility. Current projects like ‘Bhairavi’ and ‘Target’ are being shot in the state, generating employment opportunities for local communities.
Madhya Pradesh is steadily carving its niche as a prime filming destination, combining scenic locales, historical charm, and filmmaker-friendly governance.
