Lucknow: In a rare and complex medical case, doctors at Balrampur Hospital in Lucknow successfully removed a 14-centimetre-long human tail from the back of an 18-month-old child, giving him a new lease on life. The abnormal growth was deeply attached to the spinal membranes between the vertebrae, causing severe pain and difficulty in sitting, lying down, and even basic movements.
Family Shocked As Child’s ‘Tail’ Grew With Age
According to reports, the child, Suryansh, son of Sushil Kumar, was born with a tail-like structure on his back. As he grew, the tail continued to increase in size, leading to constant discomfort. The family was distressed and confused about the condition. After counselling by doctors, they agreed to go ahead with the surgery.
A Rare Human Tail — Deeply Connected to the Spine
Doctors described the condition as a rare form of human tail, intricately connected to the spinal cord membranes. Due to its depth and proximity to vital structures, the surgery required extreme precision.
The 14-cm structure was removed during a highly delicate 1.5-hour operation. The child had been admitted on 13 November, following a series of MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, and blood tests—all of which returned normal results, clearing the way for surgery.
Child Recovering Well After Intensive Care
After the operation, the child was kept under close observation in the ICU for several days. Doctors have confirmed that his condition is now steadily improving.
The case stands as a powerful reminder of how timely medical intervention and expert surgical skill can transform a young life.
