Pune/Baramati: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar tragically lost his life in a private plane crash near Baramati early Wednesday morning. The accident occurred around 8:45 AM, claiming the lives of five people on board.
Pawar’s Learjet 45, an eight-seater private jet from the Bombardier family, was traveling from Mumbai to Baramati when it went down approximately 100 kilometers from Pune. Among the passengers were two pilots, a flight attendant, and a private security officer. They have been identified as Captain Sumit Kapoor, First Officer Shambhavi Pathak, flight attendant Pinky Mali, and security officer Videep Jadhav.
How the Accident Happened
Preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility due to dense fog and possible technical issues may have contributed to the crash. CCTV footage shows the aircraft descending when its wings suddenly tilted sharply to the left, causing it to lose control and crash. There was no emergency Mayday call from the crew, indicating that the pilots may not have had sufficient time to react. The exact cause will be determined once the plane’s black box is analyzed by investigators.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a detailed inquiry into the crash. Witnesses in nearby areas, including Anita Athawale from Gojubavi village, reported seeing the jet flying unusually low and making an abrupt turn just before it plummeted.
Civil Aviation Ministry Statement
The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed that the jet took off from Mumbai at 8:00 AM and established contact with Baramati Air Traffic Control at 8:18 AM. Initially, the pilots reported that the runway was not visible and attempted a go-around maneuver. At 8:43 AM, after confirming visibility of the runway, landing clearance was granted. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage suggest that the aircraft became unstable just moments before the crash, with the wings tilting at irregular angles and the jet losing altitude rapidly.
Authorities are now awaiting the black box analysis to uncover the exact sequence of events and the root cause of this tragic accident.
