Legal Troubles Mount for Aniruddhacharya Over Controversial Remarks on Women; Court Registers Case

Mathura:
Religious preacher Swami Aniruddhacharya Maharaj, who has been under fire for allegedly making derogatory remarks against women, is now facing escalating legal complications. A local court in Mathura has formally registered a case against him after taking cognizance of a petition filed in connection with his controversial statement that went viral on social media in October.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Utsav Raj Gaurav accepted the complaint and ordered its official registration, paving the way for the legal proceedings to move forward. The preacher will now be required to appear before the court and respond to the charges. It is worth noting that a similar case had earlier been lodged against him in Varanasi as well.

What Triggered the Controversy?

In a widely circulated video, Swami Aniruddhacharya was seen making objectionable comments about young women, claiming that “nowadays girls marry at 25, and by then they have already been involved with multiple men.”
The remark sparked nationwide outrage, with civil society groups, women’s rights organisations, and countless individuals condemning it as a direct attack on women’s dignity and character.

Amid the mounting backlash, Aniruddhacharya later issued a clarification, claiming his statements were “misinterpreted and distorted,” and insisting that he respects women. However, the protests and legal challenges continued to intensify.

Petition Filed by Meera Rathore

The latest legal action stems from a petition filed by Meera Rathore, District President of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (Agra), who argued that the preacher’s remarks amounted to a grave insult to women. She urged the court to initiate strict action in the interest of public decency and women’s rights.

After hearing the matter, the CJM court officially registered the complaint. The next hearing has been scheduled for January 1, when the court will record Rathore’s statement as part of the preliminary proceedings.

Rathore’s counsel, Advocate Manish Gupta, hailed the court’s decision as a “significant victory” and an important step toward upholding women’s honour.

A Growing Challenge for the Preacher

With the complaint now formally admitted, the case has moved from public outrage to a full-fledged judicial process. If the allegations of obscene or derogatory speech against women are upheld during the trial, Swami Aniruddhacharya could face serious legal consequences.

What began as a social media controversy has now entered the courtroom, and all eyes will be on the upcoming hearings that will determine the future course of action in this high-profile case.
