Sikar, Rajasthan: The revered Khatu Shyam Temple Trust, known worldwide for its spiritual significance, has come under the shadow of criminal intimidation. Manavendra Singh Chauhan, son of the former treasurer of the temple committee, Kalu Singh, filed a complaint claiming that an individual, posing as a member of the notorious Lawrence gang, called from a foreign number and demanded ₹3 crore. The caller threatened that failure to pay the amount within the stipulated time would result in a deadly attack on the family.
Threatening Call from Abroad
According to the complainant, the caller spoke aggressively, claiming links with a major criminal network and stating that he had previously intimidated many people in a similar manner. He claimed to have detailed knowledge of the family and its activities, warning that his threats should not be taken lightly. Multiple death threats were issued during the call, which left the victim frightened and seeking police protection immediately.
Rising Incidents in the District
Police records indicate that in the past year, more than ten people in the district have received similar extortion threats. In most cases, criminals have used foreign numbers or social media apps to claim affiliation with notorious gangs. Police suspect that cybercriminals or local miscreants may be exploiting gang names to intimidate citizens.
Investigation Underway
Based on Manavendra Singh Chauhan’s complaint, a formal case has been registered, and the foreign call is being thoroughly investigated. Inspector Pawan Kumar Choubey, SHO of Khatushyamji Police Station, confirmed that all aspects of the threat are being examined carefully.
Weakening of Local Criminal Networks
Police officials noted that consistent action over the past months has significantly weakened local criminal networks. Consequently, offenders now rely on technology and foreign numbers rather than confronting targets directly. The investigation is examining call detail records, technical evidence, and the extent of the network involved.
Police Appeal to the Public
Authorities have urged citizens not to panic if they receive threats or suspicious calls and messages. They advise immediately reporting such incidents to the nearest police station or cyber cell. Prompt reporting allows law enforcement to act quickly and reach the perpetrators. Police are actively probing the case to determine whether the individual making the threats is truly affiliated with a criminal gang or merely misusing the gang’s name.
