Jodhpur:
Renowned Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, currently lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), was brought to AIIMS Jodhpur under tight security on Saturday morning for a comprehensive medical examination, following directions from the Supreme Court.
According to official sources, Wangchuk had complained of a serious abdominal infection, allegedly caused by the consumption of contaminated water inside the jail premises. In view of his deteriorating health condition, a detailed medical assessment was deemed necessary.
High-Security Transfer from Jail to Hospital
Wangchuk was escorted from the jail to AIIMS Jodhpur amid elaborate security arrangements. Acting on the instructions of Police Commissioner Om Prakash, high-alert security was enforced along the entire route and within the hospital campus. Additional police personnel were deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
Examination by Senior Specialists
At AIIMS Jodhpur, Wangchuk was examined by a team of senior specialist doctors. Given the nature of his complaints, he was specifically evaluated by a gastroenterologist, who conducted necessary diagnostic tests to assess the severity of the abdominal infection.
Hospital sources said that Wangchuk’s condition is being closely monitored and that all required medical procedures have been followed as per protocol.
Report to Be Submitted to Supreme Court
The medical report prepared after the examination will be submitted to the Supreme Court by February 2. Based on the findings, the court will decide on the next course of legal and medical action.
Supreme Court-Directed Health Monitoring
The medical check-up was conducted strictly in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions, which had ordered that Wangchuk be examined by a specialist doctor, particularly a gastroenterologist, to ascertain the exact nature of his health issues.
21 Medical Examinations So Far
Officials said that Sonam Wangchuk has undergone medical examinations 21 times so far, and his health condition is under continuous observation by both the jail authorities and the health department.
Wangchuk has been in judicial custody at Jodhpur Central Jail since September 2025, with periodic health reports being placed before the court.
