
Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh: Social worker Krishna Pandey, popularly known as “Azad”, was recently honored with the Yashwant Rao Kelkar Youth Award 2025 by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the national convention of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Dehradun.
Hailing from Khajurgawa village, Campierganj police station area, Gorakhpur, Krishna Pandey was recognized for his outstanding contributions to social causes, including rehabilitation of mentally ill individuals, drug de-addiction programs, and helping the homeless and marginalized.
On returning to Gorakhpur, Azad was warmly welcomed by supporters and well-wishers. Reflecting on the award, he said:
“I do not work for awards or recognition. Serving society, especially those left behind by the mainstream, is my true duty. That is the real reward for me, and my entire life is dedicated to this cause.”
A Modern-Day Guardian for the Vulnerable
Krishna Pandey’s social initiatives have earned him a reputation as a messiah for the marginalized. He runs the Smile Roti Bank, an organization that provides food, shelter, and rehabilitation support to the needy. Under his leadership, the organization has aided hundreds of homeless and mentally ill individuals, while also conducting awareness campaigns on begging eradication and substance abuse prevention.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Azad was particularly active in helping the hungry and distressed, carrying even deceased individuals to ensure proper respect, further solidifying his image as Gorakhpur’s compassionate protector of the helpless.

Born on 17 January 1986 to farmer Lalji Pandey and a homemaker mother, Azad completed his postgraduate studies and now resides in Avash Vikas Colony, Surajkund, Gorakhpur. He is a full-time social worker, founder of the Smile Roti Bank, member of several social committees, and a counselor at Gorakhpur District Jail.
Through his unwavering dedication, Krishna Pandey embodies the spirit of selfless service, inspiring young people and citizens alike to contribute to society with compassion and resolve.
