Kolkata: A tragic fire at a warehouse in Kolkata’s Anandpur area has claimed the lives of 16 people, while 13 others remain missing. The blaze broke out early on 26 January at a warehouse used by the popular quick-service food company Wow Momo. The warehouse stored packaged dry food items and bottles of soft drinks — highly flammable materials that caused the fire to spread rapidly.
Police sources revealed that charred human remains were still present inside the building, underscoring the scale of the disaster. Emergency services have been placed on high alert as forensic teams work to identify the deceased and provide support to affected families.
Timeline of the Incident
The fire reportedly started around 3 AM on 26 January. Due to the large quantity of flammable goods stored inside, the blaze quickly engulfed the entire warehouse. Authorities are still searching for at least 13 missing individuals, while rescue operations continue under tense conditions.
Company Statement
Wow Momo issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “On 26 January 2026 at around 3 AM, a fire from a neighboring warehouse spread to our Anandpur facility, completely destroying the warehouse. Tragically, we have lost two valued employees and a contracted security guard, which has left us heartbroken. Reports indicate the fire originated from unauthorized cooking in the adjacent property. As the number of casualties has risen, our safety arrangements are now under investigation. The West Bengal government has ordered a full inquiry.”
The incident has sent shockwaves across Kolkata, highlighting concerns over warehouse safety and emergency preparedness in commercial facilities.
