KGMU Nurse Dismissed After Child Dies Due to Alleged Injection Error

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: A nurse at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, has been dismissed following the death of a child, after an investigation revealed negligence on her part. The action comes after the hospital administration’s inquiry confirmed serious lapses in the nurse’s conduct, prompting the termination of her services. The committee also recommended canceling her registration with the Nursing Council.

The Incident

The case involves 12-year-old Sejal Verma, who suffered from a severe bone-related disorder. Despite consulting multiple doctors at various hospitals, no effective treatment was found. Ultimately, Sejal was admitted to KGMU, where doctors diagnosed her with femoral deficiency, a congenital condition in which the upper portion of the thigh bone is underdeveloped.

During her treatment, the family alleged that the nurse administered the wrong injection, which worsened Sejal’s condition. The child was immediately shifted to the ICU on ventilator support. Tragically, Sejal passed away on 24 December while under treatment at KGMU.

Investigation and Findings

Following a complaint lodged by the family, the KGMU administration conducted a formal inquiry. A seven-member committee, chaired by CMS Dr. B.K. Ojha, investigated the matter. During the inquiry, the nurse was found negligent and responsible for the incident.

KGMU spokesperson Dr. K.K. Singh stated that based on the evidence and witness statements, the committee concluded that the contractual nursing staff was at fault. Following the committee’s recommendations, the nurse’s services have been terminated, and further action regarding her professional registration has been suggested.

This case highlights the critical importance of strict adherence to medical protocols and professional accountability in healthcare institutions.
