Thiruvananthapuram: In a horrifying incident from Kerala, a woman has been arrested for allegedly burning the private parts of her five-year-old stepdaughter with a hot steel spoon. The abuse came to light when the child’s anganwadi teacher noticed she was struggling to sit in class and immediately alerted the authorities.
The police registered a case under the BNS and Juvenile Justice Act and took the accused woman into custody. The child is currently under the care of the Child Welfare Committee.
According to officials, the woman hails from Bihar, while the girl’s father, a Nepali national, works at a hotel. The incident occurred in Anarkulam, Kerala, and has sent shockwaves through the local community. The teacher’s vigilance played a critical role in bringing the case to the attention of the authorities.
Not an isolated case
This is not the first time such a brutal act has been reported in Kerala. In 2024, police in Anarkulam arrested 26-year-old Anisha, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly murdering her six-year-old stepdaughter with the help of a local tantrik (ritual healer). In that case, the child’s father, Ajaz Khan, was also taken into custody.
During investigation, police learned that Anisha was pregnant at the time and claimed she could not recall how she harmed her stepdaughter. She reportedly believed that an evil spirit compelled her to commit the act. Her husband, Ajaz Khan, stated that Anisha frequently exhibited hysterical behavior and was receiving treatment from a local tantrik.
The incident has raised serious concerns about child safety in domestic environments and the need for stricter monitoring by authorities and caregivers.
