Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil Arrested in Third Rape Case, Sent to Judicial Custody; Congress Distances Itself

Thiruvananthapuram: Rahul Mamkootathil, a Kerala MLA who was once a prominent youth face of the Congress party, has been arrested in a third rape case and sent to judicial custody. The development comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, adding to Congress’ growing concerns.

The latest case was filed by a woman residing in Canada, alleging sexual assault by Mamkootathil. This follows two earlier cases: the first case, registered in November 2024 at Nemam Police Station, involved allegations of rape and forced abortion, while the second case was filed in December 2025 by a 23-year-old woman in Bengaluru. The allegations first came to light in August 2024 when Malayalam actress Rini N. George accused an unnamed young politician of sexual misconduct, which was later linked to Mamkootathil.

Police stated that Mamkootathil, 36, allegedly used his position as an MLA to exploit women sexually. Investigators from the Kerala Police Crime Branch expressed concerns that he could intimidate complainants, influence witnesses, and destroy evidence, prompting the court to remand him in judicial custody.

Following the arrest, the Congress party has formally distanced itself from Mamkootathil. Senior party leader Muralidharan said, “Once the allegations surfaced, Rahul Mamkootathil was removed from the party. He is no longer our responsibility.” With elections around the corner, Congress faces the additional challenge of ensuring that the BJP does not turn these cases into an electoral issue.

The case has once again brought the issue of political figures’ accountability under the spotlight and sparked widespread debate across Kerala.
