KANPUR: The Uttar Pradesh government has given the green light to Kanpur’s Master Plan 2031, marking a major step in the city’s urban expansion and development. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the proposed plan on Wednesday and expressed satisfaction, instructing the Housing Principal Secretary to proceed with formal approvals. The plan is expected to receive final clearance next week.
Under the new master plan, the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) area will expand to include 386 villages across Kanpur Nagar, Unnao, and Kanpur Dehat districts. This expansion not only facilitates broader urban development but also clears the path for a new airport in Kanpur, significantly boosting regional connectivity.
Presentation and Planning Details
The master plan presentation in Lucknow was attended by KDA Vice-Chairman Madan Singh Garbyal and Chief Town Planner Manoj Kumar, while officials including Divisional Commissioner K. Vijayendra Pandian and DM Jitendra Pratap Singh joined via video conference. The plan, based on projected population growth by 2031, outlines urbanization strategies and infrastructure development across KDA’s expanded jurisdiction.
New Cities and Residential Development
The Master Plan 2031 envisions New Kanpur City, along with Chakeri and Bingwa, as key development zones. Proposed land-use changes will allow for construction of new townships, converting agricultural land into residential plots. Once implemented, these areas are expected to accommodate approximately 450,000 residents, contributing to an overall projected city population of 5.5 million by 2031.
Four Major Residential Projects
The plan also identifies four residential projects in Kulgaon, Ruma, Chakeri, and New Kanpur City. Land previously designated for commercial and central activity purposes has been reclassified for residential development, removing barriers to housing projects. Central activity zones will no longer exist in New Kanpur City, streamlining urban planning and opening the way for modern residential infrastructure.
With these measures, the KDA’s expansion under Master Plan 2031 is poised to accelerate urbanization, modernize infrastructure, and support Kanpur’s transformation into a contemporary metropolitan hub.
