Dhanbad, Jharkhand – The sensational jewelry robbery at a Katras market store has been successfully solved by the Dhanbad Police, with four accused arrested and stolen goods recovered. Authorities seized approximately 22 kilograms of silver jewelry, 400 grams of gold ornaments, and other loot from the suspects.
How the Robbery Unfolded
According to Dhanbad SSP Prabhat Kumar, the crime took place late Monday night at a jewelry shop in Khetan Tower Complex, Katras. The robbers tied up the security guard and looted 20–22 kilograms of silver, 300–400 grams of gold, and important documents. After the robbery, they attempted another burglary in Jogta, but alert locals caught three of them on the spot and handed them over to the police.
Investigation and Arrests
Following SSP’s directives, a special raid team led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Baghmara was formed. Interrogation of the three arrested culprits led to the identification and arrest of a fourth member. Recovered items included four blankets, a slingshot, two torches, a screwdriver, and an iron rod, along with the stolen jewelry.
About the ‘Nikkar Gang’
The gang, comprising around 15 members, operated from a hideout behind Dhanbad Station. They wore only shorts (nikkar) during the heists to conceal their identities, earning them the nickname ‘Nikkar Gang’. Dhanbad Railway Police personnel Ritesh Meena and Pradeep Kumar played a crucial role in the arrests and are set to be honored. Police are actively searching for the remaining gang members.
Connection to Previous Thefts
The arrested four, residents of Madhya Pradesh, used to scout jewelry stores during the day while peddling in markets and carried out night robberies from their hideout. Authorities are investigating possible links between this gang and prior jewelry thefts in Jamtara district, where a jeweler was shot during a robbery and another store was looted the following day.
This breakthrough is expected to unravel a larger network of organized theft operating across Dhanbad and surrounding areas.
