Kashmiri Man Arrested for Attempting Namaz at Ayodhya Ram Temple; Family Claims Mental Illness

Srinagar/Ayodhya: A serious security lapse occurred at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on 10 January 2026 when a 55-year-old man was arrested for attempting to offer Namaz inside the temple premises. The incident drew nationwide attention, raising concerns about security at one of India’s most sensitive religious sites.

The arrested individual has been identified as Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir. According to police, Sheikh allegedly entered the temple complex and tried to pray in the Sita Rasoi area.

Family and neighbors claim that Sheikh is mentally unstable and has been undergoing treatment. “We were unaware of his travel to Ayodhya,” said family members. Neighbors also described him as mentally disturbed, noting that he sometimes wanders off unpredictably.

Despite being a highly secure zone with multiple layers of surveillance and specially trained personnel, Sheikh managed to enter the premises, prompting concerns over procedural lapses. Police have initiated a detailed investigation into how he gained access.

During initial searches, items such as cashews and raisins were recovered. Sheikh reportedly told investigators that he intended to travel to Ajmer, Rajasthan, a prominent pilgrimage site, a claim that authorities are verifying. Intelligence agencies are examining his movements and whether he acted alone or with others.

Following his detention by temple security, Sheikh was handed over to the Ayodhya police for questioning. No formal charges have yet been filed, and the motives behind his actions are still under investigation.

The incident occurred at a sensitive time in Ayodhya, as preparations for Makar Sankranti celebrations were underway, drawing thousands of devotees. The temple complex is normally secured by approximately 200 personnel from the Special Security Force (SSF), highlighting the severity of this security breach. Authorities are expected to review security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
