Karnataka BJP MLA Faces FIR Over Cheque Bounce, Alleged Loan Default

Bengaluru, Karnataka: A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against BJP MLA Sharanu Salagar in Karnataka for issuing a bounced cheque and allegedly defaulting on a loan taken to contest the 2023 assembly elections. The MLA has also been accused of threatening the complainant and committing fraud.

According to police, the case pertains to a cheque of ₹99 lakh, which was returned unpaid. The complainant, who is reportedly a relative of the MLA, had provided the funds to support his election campaign between January and February 2023, with a commitment from the MLA to repay the entire amount within six months.

Repeated Requests Ignored:
The complainant stated that despite waiting for over two years and repeatedly reminding the MLA, the repayment was not made. On 14 September 2025, a meeting was convened where the MLA allegedly acknowledged the debt and issued a cheque for ₹99 lakh.

Alleged Threats:
When the complainant’s family approached the MLA’s residence on 16 September to confirm if the cheque could be deposited, he allegedly misbehaved and threatened them, according to the FIR.

Cheque Bounced:
The cheque was deposited at the complainant’s bank on 18 September, but was returned the following day with the remark “account closed.” Following this, a legal notice was served to the MLA on 22 September, demanding repayment within a specified period, but no response was received.

Legal Action Taken:
On 27 December 2025, an FIR was registered at Baswa Kalyan Police Station under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC):

  • 109 – Abetment of an offense
  • 314 – Criminal breach of trust
  • 318 – Cheating/fraud
  • 352 – Assault or criminal force with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman
  • 351 – Criminal intimidation
  • 74 – Assault with intent to dishonor or use criminal force

Police have confirmed that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
