Kanpur: In a shocking case of fraud and intimidation, a young woman from Kalyanpur, Kanpur, was duped of ₹71 lakh and precious jewelry after being lured with promises of marriage and an IAS selection. The suspects allegedly posed as a bank officer and later claimed that the victim had been selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
How the Scam Unfolded
The accused, Divakar Mishra (alias Satyam), a family acquaintance of the victim, introduced her to Nitesh Pandey from Chakeri, who claimed to be a field officer at a government bank. Nitesh gradually gained her trust by promising marriage and asserting that he would soon be appointed as an IAS officer. His claims were allegedly supported by his brother Jitesh, sister-in-law Akanksha, and Divakar Mishra.
The victim was first tricked into handing over ₹3.5 lakh in cash as part of a fake interview and selection process. This was followed by another ₹23 lakh in cash, along with gold and silver jewelry valued at around ₹45 lakh, which the accused kept. They also pressured her into handing over silver bars and other valuables.
Fraud and Intimidation Tactics
When the victim asked for her money back, the accused attempted to reassure her with fake appointment letters and cheques. Later, they cut off communication and began blackmailing her by threatening to leak private photos. On October 14, 2025, Divakar Mishra allegedly trespassed into the victim’s home, brandished a knife, and threatened the family with false legal cases.
Police Action
Following the complaint, the Kalyanpur police have registered an FIR against Nitesh Pandey, Divakar Mishra (alias Satyam), Jitesh Pandey, and Akanksha. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kalyanpur Ashutosh Kumar confirmed that the investigation is underway and that the accused will be apprehended soon.
This case highlights the growing trend of romantic and employment-related scams, emphasizing the need for vigilance while dealing with strangers online or through personal connections.
