Kanpur Woman Scammed for ₹6.66 Lakh in ‘Delhi Terror Attack’ Cyber Fraud

Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh: In a shocking cybercrime incident, a Kanpur woman was duped of ₹6.66 lakh by fraudsters who exploited the fear of the recent Delhi terror car blast. The scammers called the woman, claiming her name had surfaced in connection with the attack, and threatened arrest unless she transferred money to a specified account.

Modus Operandi of the Cyber Fraudsters

According to police reports, the victim, Sunita Gaur, a resident of the Cantt area, received multiple threatening calls over two consecutive days following the Delhi blast. On 10 November, the caller impersonated an ATS officer, intimidating her. The next day, another caller posing as an NIA official pressured her with threats of imprisonment, claiming she was implicated in terror-related activities.

Money Transferred in Fear

Terrified by the threats, Sunita transferred ₹6.66 lakh via RTGS to the account provided by the scammers, without informing her family. Only three days later did she reveal the incident to her relatives, who immediately approached the Cyber Crime Cell to file a complaint.

Police Advisory on Cyber Scams

ADC Crime officials warned citizens about such cyber scams, where fraudsters exploit the fear of agencies like CBI, ED, ATS, and NIA. They often claim that an individual’s identity has been misused in illegal activities, or that customs authorities have intercepted a parcel in the victim’s name containing contraband. The Cyber Crime team clarified that there is no such concept as a “digital arrest” in Indian law.

The Cyber Cell is currently tracing the account to which the money was transferred and investigating the case further. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and verify any such threatening communications with law enforcement before taking any action.
