Kanpur Ring Road Project Gains Momentum; First Phase by September, Completion by 2028

Kanpur: The ambitious 93-kilometer Kanpur Ring Road project, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving transportation around the city, is on track for completion by 2028. Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inspected the project site on Friday and provided key updates on its progress.

First Phase to Be Completed by September 2026
According to NHAI officials, construction of the six-lane ring road’s first phase is expected to be completed by September 2026. The remaining three phases are slated for completion by the end of 2027, with the final package expected to be ready by April 2028.

Project Details
The Kanpur Ring Road will stretch 93 kilometers and will include a 1.45-kilometer link connecting Chakeri Airport. Around 25% of the project has already been completed. Six major bridges are under construction as part of the project, including a 3,300-meter bridge over the Ganga River at Bithoor and a 1,100-meter bridge at Chakeri. These bridges are considered critical components of the project.

Traffic Decongestion and Connectivity
Officials claim that once operational, the ring road will triple traffic speed through the region. Currently, vehicles traveling from Hamirpur and Bundelkhand toward Lucknow must pass through Kanpur city, causing severe congestion. Upon completion, vehicles will bypass the city, enabling a smooth, jam-free route. The ring road will pass through Unnao and Kanpur Dehat districts, linking the Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway in Unnao and the Kanpur–Kabarai Greenfield Expressway at Ramai Pur.

Expressway Opening Expected in April
The NHAI also confirmed that only 105 meters of the Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway remain under construction, which is being expedited. The expressway is expected to open for traffic by April 2026, complete with restrooms on both sides, for which tenders have already been issued.

The Kanpur Ring Road is poised to become a key infrastructure milestone, boosting regional connectivity and streamlining traffic flow in one of Uttar Pradesh’s busiest urban corridors.
