Kanpur Police Arrest SP Leader Amir Jaidi After 6-Kilometer Pursuit; High-Drama Unfolds

KANPUR: Amir Jaidi, a leader of the Samajwadi Party in Kanpur, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a rape and religious conversion case, following a dramatic police pursuit that spanned six kilometers. After his capture, the police conducted a procession with the accused, drawing widespread attention.

The case stems from Ghatampur police station area, where a young woman had accused Jaidi of coercing her into sexual relations and attempting to force her to convert to Islam. Authorities had been searching for him for some time, and his eventual arrest required persistent effort by the police.

According to officials, upon learning that police were closing in, Jaidi tried to flee on a scooter. Inspector Dinesh Singh Bisht personally chased him for nearly six kilometers before finally apprehending him near Jahangirabad village.

Allegations Against Jaidi

The victim alleged that following the death of her father in 2013, Jaidi trapped her in a romantic entanglement, recording videos and blackmailing her. Last September, when her family arranged her marriage, Jaidi, along with associates Shani alias Sunny Abbas, Rizvi, and Raja alias Akhtar Ansari, allegedly began harassing her. The victim claimed he pressured her to adopt the Muslim faith and, when she refused, created fake Instagram accounts to send her photos and videos to her prospective in-laws.

In October, following her engagement, Jaidi reportedly threatened her fiancé, his sister-in-law, and other relatives, including summoning the fiancé to Galla Mandi, Kanpur, with death threats.

Police Action and Arrest

Based on the victim’s complaint, a case was filed against Jaidi and three of his associates under serious sections of the law. Inspector Bisht confirmed that Jaidi attempted to escape on a bike but was chased and caught. He was presented in court and subsequently sent to jail.

Jaidi has a history of legal troubles. In 2020, a case was filed against him for allegedly showing a black flag to Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya during his visit to Ghatampur. He also faces multiple other cases, including for assault. However, it was the latest complaint by the young woman that led to his arrest this week.
