Kanpur Lawyer Vishnu to Face Gangster Charge in Fake Judge Matrimony Scam

Kanpur/Lucknow: A shocking case of fraud has come to light in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, involving a lawyer who impersonated a judge to swindle women under the pretext of marriage. Vishnu Shankar Gupta, a practicing lawyer, is now set to face gangster charges in connection with the scam.

Gupta, posing as Judge Anshuman Vikram Singh, lured a nursing officer from Lucknow via a matrimonial website. Claiming to be a civil judge from Sitapur residing in Varanasi, he gained the trust of the woman and her family. On 4 August 2025, he tricked her into withdrawing ₹14 lakh from her bank account.

Loans Taken Through Victim
Gupta escalated his scheme by involving an associate, Seemant Agrawal, to procure loans from four banks in the victim’s name. The total fraud amounted to ₹44.54 lakh, with amounts sanctioned by HDFC Bank (₹17.37 lakh), ICICI Bank (₹4.86 lakh, ₹4.90 lakh, ₹17.39 lakh). On 7 September 2025, Gupta invited the victim to Kanpur’s Rewshree, collected the money, and disappeared.

Another Victim Comes Forward
During the police investigation, a second woman from Lucknow came forward, revealing that Gupta had similarly defrauded her of ₹35 lakh under the guise of marriage. A case has been registered at Gwaltoli Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.

Additional Allegations
Gupta is also accused of stealing court files and forging documents, leading to a separate case at Kotwali Police Station. The Kanpur police, under the guidance of SP Vineet Chaudhary, have recommended gangster charges against Vishnu Shankar Gupta and his wife Ayushi. Upon approval from the Police Commissioner, the gangster provisions will be applied.

This case has sent shockwaves across legal and social circles, highlighting the growing menace of matrimonial frauds in the region.
