Kanpur: Alleged Medical Negligence at Hallet Hospital Claims Life of 15-Year-Old Boy

A fresh case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced at Hallet Hospital in Kanpur, raising serious concerns over patient safety in one of the state’s premier government medical institutions. A 15-year-old boy lost his life after a ward staff nurse allegedly administered a potassium injection without a doctor’s prescription, officials confirmed on Monday.

The incident occurred on December 16, 2025, when the minor, identified as Satish, a resident of Orai, was undergoing treatment for abdominal pain in the hospital’s Medicine Department. According to hospital sources, a male ward staffer named Ranveer administered the injection without consulting the attending doctor. Soon after, the boy’s condition deteriorated sharply, forcing doctors to shift him to the ICU.

Despite prolonged treatment, Satish succumbed on January 3, 2026.

Staff Removed, Probe Initiated

Medical College Principal Dr. Sanjay Kala confirmed that the accused ward staffer has been removed from duty following internal findings. Although the staffer has denied administering the injection, other ward employees reportedly corroborated the allegation, prompting swift administrative action.

Dr. Kala stated that the victim’s family was advised to submit a written complaint, but no formal complaint has been received so far.

Experts Warn of Serious Risks

Head of the Medicine Department, Prof. B.P. Priyadarshi, explained that potassium injections are typically administered in cases involving muscle weakness or heart-related conditions and must be given strictly under medical supervision. “If administered unnecessarily or incorrectly, potassium can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and cardiac complications,” he said.

Questions Over Hospital Safety

The incident comes close on the heels of another controversy at Hallet Hospital, where a junior doctor had allegedly declared a living patient dead, intensifying scrutiny over hospital protocols and staff accountability.

The tragic death has once again highlighted systemic lapses, inadequate supervision, and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of medical procedures in government hospitals. While no police case has been registered yet due to the absence of a formal complaint, the incident has sparked public outrage and renewed demands for institutional reforms and accountability in the healthcare system.
