Kangana Ranaut Faces Legal Trouble as Court Frames Charges in Defamation Case Filed by Elderly Punjab Farmer

Chandigarh/Bathinda: Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut is facing intensified legal challenges in a defamation case filed by an elderly Punjab farmer, Mohinder Kaur. Despite offering an apology during a previous court appearance, the court on Monday formally framed charges against her, marking the beginning of the legal arguments in the case. The next hearing has been scheduled for 4 December 2025.

Case Background
The case stems from a controversial retweet by Kangana in December 2020, during the farmers’ protests against the three central agricultural laws. In the tweet, she compared Mohinder Kaur, a senior farmer from Bahadurgarh Jandiyan village in Bathinda district, to Bilkis Bano of the Shaheen Bagh protests. Kangana also alleged that women participating in such movements were receiving ₹100 for their involvement, a claim deemed insulting by Kaur. Mohinder Kaur subsequently filed a defamation case on 5 January 2021.

Court Proceedings
During the hearing, Mohinder Kaur was represented by her husband, Labh Singh, who emphasized that their fight is independent of any farmer organizations. He stated that their family has been pursuing the case alone from the beginning and intends to continue until justice is served.

Kangana Ranaut’s legal team argued that the retweet was a result of misunderstanding and that there was no intent to hurt anyone. She also requested permanent exemption from personal court appearances citing security concerns, proposing participation via video conferencing. The prosecution opposed this, citing that police in Bathinda have provided full security during previous hearings and are capable of continuing to do so. Kangana was not physically present in court on Monday, and her lawyers’ request for her absence was accepted by the court.

Next Steps
With charges now framed, the case will proceed with arguments on the merits, and the upcoming hearing on 4 December will be closely watched.
