Kanchanbai Meghwal’s Heroism Recognized After Tragic Death; CM Announces Compensation and Education Support for Children

Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh: The village of Ranpur in Neemuch is mourning the loss of Kanchanbai Meghwal, a courageous Anganwadi worker who sacrificed her life to save 20 children from a swarm of deadly bees. On Monday, when the attack occurred at the local Anganwadi center, Kanchanbai threw herself in front of the children, shielding them under mats and blankets. While the children survived unharmed, Kanchanbai succumbed to bee venom despite medical treatment.

Government Announces Compensation and Education Support
In the wake of her sacrifice, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for her family. Additionally, the state government will bear the educational expenses of her children, ensuring that her legacy continues to support the next generation.

Initial Denial by Department Sparks Controversy
Despite her bravery, the Women and Child Development and Education Department initially released a controversial statement denying Kanchanbai’s heroism. Investigations suggest the denial was an attempt to cover up the absence and negligence of two teachers at the Anganwadi on the day of the incident. Following widespread public outrage and political attention, the department withdrew the statement.

Negligence Exposed at Anganwadi and School Premises
The tragedy has also highlighted systemic negligence. The Anganwadi and school buildings are in poor condition, overrun with weeds and litter, providing a haven for poisonous insects. The beehive responsible for Kanchanbai’s death remained in place for four days near the village’s only hand pump. Children are currently being taught in a private plot, as the government premises remain unsafe.

Family Left Vulnerable
Kanchanbai was the sole breadwinner of her family. Her husband, Shivlal Meghwal, has been bedridden for five years due to paralysis. She was raising their three children while also leading self-help initiatives for local women. With her passing, the family has been left vulnerable, relying on state support.

Children and Villagers Demand Justice
Eyewitnesses, including students Jivika and Jai Lakshmi, stated that without Kanchanbai’s quick actions, the outcome would have been catastrophic. Villagers have warned that the fight for justice will continue until negligent teachers are held accountable and the family receives due compensation.

Kanchanbai Meghwal’s sacrifice has become a symbol of courage, shining a light on both the heroism of individuals and the urgent need for government accountability in protecting children and citizens.
