Kalyan-Dombivli, Maharashtra: The mayoral reservation lottery for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra was conducted today. In Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), the mayoral post has been reserved for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, ending any claim the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have had.
The voting for these municipal corporations was held on January 15, with results declared on January 16. Attention then turned to which party would occupy the mayoral positions. On January 22, the lottery determined the reservation categories. In KDMC, the ST category has been chosen for the mayor’s post.
BJP Eliminated from Contention
Since BJP does not have a single corporator from the ST category in KDMC, it is effectively out of the race for the mayoral position. This has sparked discussions on which party’s candidate from the ST category will ultimately take the post.
Key Contenders
Three corporators from the ST category are in the fray for KDMC’s mayoral post. Shiv Sena has two eligible corporators — Kiran Bhangale and Harshali Thawil — while the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has one candidate, Sheetal Mandhari. The decision now lies on which of these three will be nominated as mayor.
Who Will Win?
With no ST corporators from BJP, the race is primarily between Shiv Sena and MNS. Shiv Sena-backed Eknath Shinde’s faction has two corporators, while MNS has one. Political observers are closely watching to see who emerges victorious in this high-stakes contest.
